What is Somatic Experiencing?
Healing Beyond Words: An Introduction to Somatic Experiencing
Have you ever noticed that even when you logically know you're safe, your body still doesn't seem to believe it?
Maybe your mind tells you everything is fine, but your body feels anxious before difficult conversations. Perhaps you find yourself constantly overthinking, unable to relax, or feeling emotionally and physically exhausted despite getting enough sleep.
You might experience:
A racing heart or tight chest
Chronic anxiety or hypervigilance
Difficulty relaxing or slowing down
Feeling disconnected or numb
Trouble trusting yourself or your decisions
Feeling "stuck" despite years of personal growth or therapy
If this sounds familiar, you're not imagining it—and it's not all in your head.
Traditional talk therapy can be incredibly helpful for understanding why we feel the way we do. However, stress, anxiety, and trauma don't just live in our thoughts—they also live in our bodies and nervous systems. Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a gentle, body-centered approach that helps your nervous system release stress and return to a greater sense of balance and safety.
The Wisdom of Your Nervous System
To understand how Somatic Experiencing works, it helps to look at nature.
Wild animals are regularly exposed to life-threatening danger, yet they rarely suffer from trauma. Once the threat passes, they naturally shake, tremble, or take deep breaths to release the energy that helped them survive.
As humans, we're often taught to push through difficult experiences, ignore what our bodies are telling us, or make sense of our emotions through logic alone. When we experience overwhelming stress, trauma, or chronic anxiety, our nervous systems can remain stuck in survival mode long after the danger has passed.
Your nervous system may become accustomed to living in one of two states:
The "On" Switch (Fight or Flight)
You may feel:
Constantly anxious or on edge
Irritable or easily overwhelmed
Unable to relax or slow down
Restless or unable to sit still
Like you're always preparing for the next thing
The "Off" Switch (Freeze)
You may feel:
Emotionally numb or disconnected
Unmotivated or exhausted
Shut down or withdrawn
Foggy or unable to access your emotions
Like you're simply going through the motions of daily life
Many people move back and forth between these two states without realizing it.
What to Expect in a Somatic Experiencing Session
Somatic Experiencing is entirely gentle and respects your body's pacing. You do not need to retell or relive painful experiences in order to heal.
Instead of diving into the details of what happened, we become curious about how your body is holding stress right now.
During a session, we might:
Notice sensations present in your body.
Explore patterns of tension, breathing, and movement.
Identify moments when your nervous system feels activated or overwhelmed.
Help your body experience small moments of safety, ease, and regulation.
Work slowly and collaboratively to build your nervous system's capacity for resilience.
Healing often happens through subtle shifts—a deeper breath, relaxed shoulders, warmth returning to your body, or simply feeling more present and connected to yourself.
Why Clients Often Love Somatic Work
Many of my clients are insightful and self-aware. They've read the books, listened to the podcasts, and understand their patterns intellectually. Yet they often tell me:
"I know why I do this, but I still can't stop."
That's because healing isn't only cognitive—it's physiological.
Your nervous system doesn't respond to insight alone. Sometimes your body needs an opportunity to experience safety before lasting change can occur.
Somatic work can be especially helpful if you tend to:
Overthink or live primarily in your head
Struggle with anxiety or chronic stress
Feel disconnected from your emotions or body
Have difficulty setting boundaries
Feel stuck in relationship patterns despite understanding them intellectually
Find it difficult to relax or simply "be"
Why Somatic Experiencing Works
By working directly with the nervous system, Somatic Experiencing helps your body learn that it is safe to let go of chronic stress responses.
Rather than forcing yourself to calm down through willpower, Somatic Experiencing creates the conditions for your nervous system to naturally settle.
Over time, clients often experience:
Greater emotional regulation
Reduced anxiety and hypervigilance
Increased resilience during stressful situations
Improved connection with themselves and others
A deeper sense of safety and ease in their bodies
The goal isn't to eliminate stress or difficult emotions. It's to help you feel more grounded, present, and connected to yourself so that life's challenges no longer feel like they have to be carried alone—or held so tightly in your body.
Work With Me
Many of my clients come to therapy feeling disconnected from themselves despite appearing high-functioning on the outside. They are thoughtful, successful, and deeply caring—but often carry chronic stress, anxiety, or relational wounds that live not only in their minds but also in their bodies.
My approach integrates Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and trauma-informed therapy to help you better understand your patterns, regulate your nervous system, and cultivate a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
I specialize in working with women navigating relationship difficulties, people-pleasing, perfectionism, life transitions, and trauma.
I offer virtual therapy for adults throughout California and Florida.
Healing doesn't have to happen through insight alone. Sometimes your body needs an opportunity to feel safe enough to let go.
